According to Warhammer 40,000 Rogue Trader:

Native Cthellean Bear

Native Cthellean Bear

“The Cudbear is a vicious carnivore originating from the Cthelle Death World.  Its natural habitat is cool woodland and mountain, and its shaggy coat is ideal for keeping out the cold and wet.  The same coat also gives the creature the appearance of a large, purple, excessively furry bear with gaping tooth filled mouth and long rending talons.  Cudbears are highly territorial and ruthless killers, and think nothing of attacking even large numbers of well armed troops.”

“The Cthellean Cudbear is a useful example of a typical Death World carnivore.  Any number of similar creatures can be represented with the same profile and habits.  It can be controlled by the GM, moving towards and attacking the nearest models at all times.”

The model that I used to represent this classic RT wandering monster is a Secrets of the Third Reich Soviet Urzine Were Bear.  A regular bear model would have worked fine too (and is undoubtedly what the RT authors intended) but when I saw this model for sale cheaply I bought it with this use in mind.  I like that the design suggests some sort of bear – its still vaguely ursine in some way – while not looking like any real-life bear.

The howling pose makes the figure hard to photograph properly, which compounds that it has quite an odd face that is a little hard to make out.  It looks fine on the table though, staring up at its owner.

The cudbear got a pretty fast series of drybrushes for its fur, followed by a little bit of layering on the tongue, snout, head, ears and paw pads.  I painted the teeth and claws up from orange through to white rather than the browns that I usually use.  I thought that the orange would look nice and space-alien-y against the purple, but its a pretty subtle thing really, hardly visible.

It took me a while to figure out just what the models mouth reminded me of, but I worked it out eventually: it reminds me the mouth on Mikey, the alien disguised as a immigrant at the beginning of Men in Black.

Cudbear is the name of a purple dye in real life.  I didnt know that until very recently.  So the creatures name is – technically speaking – a form of joke.

  1. So, it’s not short for Cuddles Bear, then? Really nice work.

PS I would totally watch that Peter Jackson film.

    • Thanks Barks 🙂

Naming the beast a cudbear sounds like the silly sort of thing that might have happened in the games that I played over the years, like whistling “Winds of Change” whenever Striking Scorpions disembark or describing a friends Ork Warboss tactics as “Heimlichs Maneuvers”. Stupid but fun all the same.

That a daft creature name like Cthelean Cudbear that made it into print highlights the more relaxed attitude prevalent in Rogue Trader: back in the late eighties Priestly and co. had no idea that 40k would become the juggernaut that it is now.

I guess I would rather the version of Catachan Devil Vs Cudbear 3D was one of Peters later, Weta CGI filled affairs, but I would probably have watched it if he made it around the Brain Dead era too (although I cant watch that movie any more. Im too old and sensitive and watching it is like being assaulted).

Thanks for the feedback 🙂 More RT/pulp sci-fi beasties in the pipeline.

  2. Pleasantly surprised by how many of the design features from the Rogue Trader illustration are on the Were Bear. Better that he is more sci-fi looking than bear like given the setting.

I would have been tempted to sculpt on a tiny tail on his butt as it looks humanoid and not mammalian enough to my mind. Even without a wee tail on his furry trousers he is still a good Cudbear model though.

In terms of musical standpoint, it seems to me that perhaps this fellow is a soul singer, or perhaps Russian opera is his thing….haven’t decided yet.

    • Boney M – “Rasputin” maybe?

Like the Catachan Devil, this model is a surprisingly good visual match for the RT illustration. I dont expect this pattern to continue though: there will be lots of fudging and “close enough”s as this project continues.

Expendiency is a watchword. I could get a Death Ferret painted in the time taken to research and sculpt a tail on the cudbear. The model is just as cromulent without it, particularly considering how much table time the model is likely to see.

  3. How about “Rasputin the Cudbear, Cthellea’s greatest hug machine”?

Expediency – ’tis better to to reflect on models you have painted than to not have painted them in the first place!

I can’t wait to see what you come up with for a Pterra-squirrel.

    😉

    • Tee hee! Im not going to come up with better than “Cthelleas greatest Love Machine” any time soon 😀

The Ptera-squirrel is actually high on my list of priorities for this project.
